Chuck Close – A Couple of Ways of Doing Something
Exhibition Dates: January 31, 2013 – March 31, 2013
Poetry Reading by Bob Holman: Thursday, March 28, 2013 7:00pm
A Couple of Ways of Doing Something features fifteen of Chuck Close’s delicately intimate daguerreotypes (including striking enlargements) of leading contemporary artists, paired with Bob Holman’s witty and beautifully typeset poems. As individual portraits, each daguerreotype offers an intimate and immensely revealing study of the subject, extending the hyper-realist tradition of portraiture for which Close is renowned. In keeping with the exhibition title, Chuck Close, as curator, has included examples of his other works taken from each daguerreotype in a variety of media, including tapestries and photogravures. The collected work becomes a transfixing group portrait of Close’s influential and highly creative circle of friends and colleagues—from Andres Serrano to Cindy Sherman—as well as an exploration of challenging photographic mediums.
Exhibition organized by Aperture Foundation, New York.
Museum of Fine Arts
Photographing the City February 9, 2013 through May 26, 2013
This exhibition explores how nineteenth and twentieth-century photographers responded to cities and towns, presented and preserved their history, and influenced their perception by the public. Among the artists represented are Berenice Abbott, Walker Evans, Aaron Siskind, Weegee, and Garry Winogrand, as well as many unknown photographers from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
HERB RITTS: L.A. Style
February 23, 2013 – May 19, 2013
Herb Ritts (American, 1952–2002) was a Los Angeles-based photographer who established an international reputation for his distinctive photographs of fashion models, nudes, and celebrities. From the late 1970s until his untimely death from AIDS in 2002, Ritts's ability to create photographs that successfully bridged the gap between art and commerce was not only a testament to the power of his imagination and technical skill but also marked the synergy between art, popular culture, and business that followed in the wake of the Pop Art movement of the 1960s and 1970s. This exhibition features a selection of Ritts's vintage prints and magazine covers. |
